Discovering Careers in Construction

On Wednesday, October 15, the buzz of excitement filled the Jefferson City Jaycees Fairgrounds as the AGCMO Build My Future Central Missouri event unfolded. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the fairgrounds transformed into an interactive hub, designed for high school students 9th-12th grade eager to explore careers in construction. With 1,581 students registered, this year’s turnout highlighted an increasing interest among youth in the construction industry.


The AGCMO Build My Future event offers a unique opportunity for companies and organizations to showcase a variety of careers available in construction. By providing hands-on experiences, students gain essential insights into different trades and professions, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future. This year’s event was packed with engaging activities designed to inspire and educate.


Our chapters traditional Skills Relay Race is always a hit, attracting students eager to compete for the fastest times!!


Safety was prioritized with competitors donning high-visibility vests, hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses before starting.

The second station students used an impact driver to select the correct screw, drive it into a wooden post, and back it out again, emphasizing safety and precision in construction.

At the final station, students located an item on civil construction blueprints under the pressure of a timer -  adding excitement.

The AGCMO Build My Future event is not just a fun day—it plays an important role in shaping the future workforce of the construction industry. Engaging high school students in hands-on activities helps demystify construction careers, inspiring them to pursue paths they may not have previously considered.


With the demand for skilled workers continuing to rise, events like Build My Future are key in bridging the gap between education and the workforce. By providing students with practical tools and knowledge, we prepare them for success in their future careers.
